Exterior Upholstery
Chicago Marine Canvas provides premium exterior upholstery services. We specialize in reupholstering your existing furniture pieces, such as captain chairs and cushions, as well as crafting entirely new products. Our projects are completely customizable, ensuring a perfect fit for your space and bringing your vision to life.
If we are reupholstering an existing piece, we can match the old material or redesign. Just a quick note: the new upholstery will look new and will not exactly match old cushions. You may have noticed wear and tear, discoloration or dirt on your old cushions that will not be on the new cushions. We recommend updating your upholstery in sections. If cushions touch or are viewable together, they should be updated together.
Exterior Upholstery Fabric
At Chicago Marine Canvas, we use top-quality upholstery materials to achieve a top-quality look. We use fabric, vinyl, and faux leather specifically designed for marine applications. They are resistant to abrasions, harsh weather conditions, mold and mildew. They provide optimal protection while maintaining their pristine condition.
Sunbrella® is a popular choice for several reasons. Their upholstery fabric comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns for you to choose from. It’s fade resistant and easy to clean.
Silvertex® is a coated fabric that is engineered, tested and certified to resist the toughest conditions in marine environments. Anti-stain treatment, impermeability, UV-resistance, Cold Crack and Mildew resistance ensure durability.
Framing
For exterior upholstery, the best option is King StarBoard®. Use the original marine-grade high-density polyethylene sheet and the industry standard. It is the product of a proprietary process called K-Stran™, the most advanced manufacturing process for superior flatness and consistency. King StarBoard® is environmentally stabilized to withstand the harshest marine conditions. It will not warp, rot, or delaminate when exposed to humidity or water. King StarBoard® is easy to fabricate with standard woodworking tools and requires little or no finishing.
Foam
For sunpads or bow pads, we use Dri-Fast. For other exterior upholstery items, the foam density and quality make up the kind of cushion you’ll have. The quality determines how the foam regains its shape or “memory.” Sometimes a cushion may feel hard, but you’re actually “bottoming out” and feeling the frame underneath. This means you would want a denser foam that will hold you up off the wooden or plastic bottom.
